A Perfect Moment

Sunday morning, dawn breaking, cold and grey...
Standing on our twelfth floor balcony, looking out over the city...
Arm 'round the one I love, the one who loves me more than I deserve...
Looking up... "Will you still love me when I am ninety?"
Brushing the dark bangs from my eyes... her smile a gentle curve...
"I will still love you when you are ninety... and a day..."

EPIPHANY

Like an epiphany,
The roar of the crashing surf
Fills the girl's conscious…
Washing over her senses.

Cool, rushing waters
Surge up the flat expanse of beach…
Sand shifts beneath her smooth, worn feet.

Long, dark hair
Swept and swirled by ocean breeze…
Tease her wind-burnished cheeks.

Eyes searching the far horizon,
It is here… on this barren shore…
Where two destinies converge…
And a new journey will begin.

3 A.M.

Dark dungeon… her familiar cage
Stone walls echo her dripping misery…
Skittering sounds mock her ceaseless thrashing
Heartbeat darkly pounding in her useless rage

Imprisoned in filth and sweat… tortured hours on end
Haunting the blood of her fevered brain without mercy…
Three words chasing away the sleep that wants in

Piteous cry… what have I to negotiate?
What will bring peace to this suffering soul?
Does the drawer in hand’s reach promise only self-hate?

Spoon and needle… waiting in bedside table
Liquid fire to cleanse vertiginous thoughts
It’s only a hundred bloody words, girl…
Surely you are able?

STING

Damp cloth wipes pale cheek of night’s tears.

Gentle hands unclench spasmed fingers.

Cool linen drawn over body in silent defeat.

The battle bravely fought… now… the end of fears.

Mirrored doors close… motor hums… elevator slices through floors.

Soft thud as gravity announces… doors slide open… basement beckons.

Revenant shadows floating past… ghostly hands outstretched in plea.

Gurney wheels roll with thrum and squeak… down faded corridors.

Soft caress over cooling flesh… sheet floats in silent flight.

Bright fluorescent reflects in dark eyes… orbs unmoving.

Nostrils pinch with acrid disdain… fingers of death’s stench.

Shadow looms overhead… gloved hand holds dancing light.

Sharp sting traverses once proud chest… trailing down abdomen.

Blade whispers, swift and sure... sound chases blooded steel.

Dark red paints pale flesh…river of warmth pools in umbilical’s knot.

Unfeeling hands grasp… rending layers reveal tormented soul within.

Silent scream echoes inside her head.

Protestations unheard.

Comes the final sting.

Death’s pride has the last word…

WHAT DREAMS MAY COME

WHAT DREAMS MAY COME
By Veronica Marie Lewis-Shaw

 ~ * ~

Mortar and pestle mix two into one,
Dark, bitter organia pinches the tongue.
Silent demons tell what must be done.

Do you understand my fate?
Running… then waiting… always too late.
The path I am given leads not to a gate.

‘Neath the vast carnelian sky,
Clouds of rose and red drifting by.
At my feet then does eternity lie,
Gasoline rainbow reflected in my eye.

‘Twixt mushroom and toadstool,
I cannot, but try to understand…
Truth is only an illusion, devised by man.
With lit match, Death now makes a fool.

Two into one… now undone.

REMEMBER ME

REMEMBER ME
By Veronica Marie Lewis-Shaw

~ * ~

Tell me no.
Tell me now.
Tell me I must go.

Tears in my eyes,
A longing ache in my heart.
Words you whisper in my ear,
Sounding more like breathless sighs.

Will you remember me?
Tell me these were more than stolen moments.
When we lie in each other’s arms,
Two breasts sharing, beating in present tense.
Say you will…  Remember me.
